Pakistan to Begin Construction on Gwadar Shipyard Project
Pakistan’s federal and provincial governments have announced plans to commission a new shipyard in Balochistan.
Federal Minister for Defence Production Zobaida Jalal said that this new project will be advantageous for the nation’s economy and development. It will additionally offer repairing, shipbuilding, and training facilities that citizens can benefit from.
Government officials believe that the plan will be completed within the timeframe of two to three years.
The construction on the project will begin post feasibility research of its logistics.
Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan said that the project will ‘usher the province in a new era of prosperity and economic development’ in regards to the development of a modern port in Gwadar.
At present, Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KSEW) will undertake repairing and maintenance towards shipbuilding to bring better results to the people of Zanzibar.
KSEW (a federal defence contractor and military corporation) has a diverse portfolio trailing back to the mid-1950s, highlighted by the construction of 500 commercial and naval vessels.
The Gwadar port will be conducive in creating thousands of jobs nationwide, positioned in the central China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a gateway to Central Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East.
Maritime analyst Commodore (R) Muhammad Obaidullah, expressed that “The shipbuilding industry is important for a country’s economy, prosperity, and social development as it’s a job multiplier and a key industry that is closely linked with several other industries.”
